Chemical Analysis

Black Seed oil owes its potency to key components such as aromatic oils, trace elements, vitamins and enzymes. It contains 58% of essential fatty acids including Omega 6 and Omega 3. These play a vital part in the forming of Prostaglandin E1 which balances and strengthens the immune system giving it the power to prevent infections and allergies and control chronic illnesses.

Black Seed also contains significant proportions of protein, carbohydrates and essential fatty acids:

  • Protein-21%
  • Carbohydrates-38%
  • Plant fats and oils-35%

Black Seed also contains over 100 valuable nutrients. Apart from its active ingredient, crystalline nigellone, Black Seed contains:

  • 15 amino acids (including eight of the nine essential ones)
  • Fatty acids including linolenic and oleic
  • Volatile oils- such as nigellone and thymoquinone (Read more below)
  • Alkaloids
  • Dietary fibre, and Minerals such as calcium, iron, sodium, potassium, Vitamin A, magnesium, zinc and selenium

Role of Active Ingredients

Two of the most volatile oils found in Black seed are Nigellone and Thymoquinone which were first discovered in the herb in 1985:

  • Nigellone offers both anti-spasmodic and bronchodilating properties which contribute to Black Seed's potency against respiratory ailments. It also acts as an antihistamine which helps to reduce the negative symptoms of allergy sufferers.
  • Thymoquinone contains excellent anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties. It is also a strong anti-oxidant and helps cleanse the body of toxins.

Both nigellone and thymoquinone work in conjunction with one another to enhance Black Seed's action against respiratory ailments. It also provides a healthy alternative to the more commonly prescribed cortisone based therapies used by allergy sufferers.

A deficiency in polyunsaturated fatty acids can lead to a wide number of health problems including nervous system disorders, uninhibited growths, and skin diseases. Black Seed provides a rich supply of polyunsaturated fatty acids. These ingredients play a key role in daily health and wellness. They help to regulate metabolism, carry toxins to the skin's surface for elimination, balance insulin levels, regulate cholesterol, improve body circulation, and promote healthy liver function

Cure for allergies

A study conducted in Munich examined Black Seed oil in order to find new therapies for chronic illness and the effect of Black Seed oil in curing allergies. The results of this study found 70% patients were cured of allergies- such as pollen and dust, acne and neuro-dermatological illnesses and asthma patients, with regular use of Black Seed oil. In addition to concluding the positive effects of Black Seed oil in curing allergies, one of the many conclusions derived from this study was that an immune system which has gone wrong can again be regulated by the strong effect of Black Seed oil.

Antibiotic effect

A study conducted in 1997, Dhaka, Bangladesh sough to investigate the antibacterial activity of the oil of Nigella Sativa (Black Seed) compared to five antibiotics. The Nigella Sativa oil proved to be more effective against many strains of bacteria, including those known to be highly resistant to drugs.

Targets and suppresses the growth of cancer cells

Researchers from Tulane University in the United States have found that Black Seed oil from the Nigella Sativa plant is found to kill prostate cancer cells, found in lab studies. It was found that a substance found in Black Seed Oil- known as Thymoquinone (TQ), has anti-cancer properties that suppress the growth and lead to death of aggressive prostate cancer cells.

Since 1959, there have been over 200 different studies at universities and laboratories. At the Cancer Research Laboratory of Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, USA, one of the largest experimental studies so far, proved that Nigella Sativa oil had enormous success in tumour therapy without the negative side effects of common chemo-therapy. Research found that it increased the growth rate of bone marrow cells by a staggering 250% and it inhibited tumour growth by 50%. It stimulated immune cells and raised the interferon production which protects cells from the cell destroying effect of viruses. They confirmed the strong anti-bacterial and anti-micotic effects and that it has an effect in lowering the blood sugar level which is essential for the treatment of diabetes.

Potent analgesic and anti-inflammatory drug

As early as 1960, it was reported that Black Seed oil has an anti-inflammatory effect and that it could be useful for relieving arthritis pain. Following up on these claims, a group of scientists from Kings College, London, decided to test Black Seed oil and its derivative thymoquinone as an anti-inflammatory agent. It was discovered that the agents possessed anti-oxidant activity and inhibited eicosanoid generation in cells. Certain eicosanoids (short lived local tissue hormones) are responsible for the inflammatory response whereas anti-oxidants help to slow cartilage degeneration. Researchers concluded that pharmacological properties of Black Seed and its derived products support the traditional use of Black Seed as a treatment for rheumatism and related inflammatory diseases.

Diabetes

In 2002 at the Gifu University, Japan, studies concluded that Nigella Sativa (Black Seed) may be of significant value to sufferers of Diabetes 2.

Findings from Turkey in 2003 confirmed that Nigella Sativa (Black Seed) lowered sugar levels in diabetic rabbits, bringing levels back to control. In 2004 at the Faculty of Medicine, Zonguldak Karaelmas University, Zonguldak, Turkey they tested the effects of Nigella Sativa on diabetic rats. They concluded that Nigella Sativa (Black Seed) treatment exerts a therapeutic protective effect in diabetes.

Immune-boosting properties

In 1987, a study conducted at I.I.M.E.R. Panama City, Florida verified the immune-supporting action of Black Seed. Two randomized groups of volunteers received one-gram of Black Seed capsules twice daily or a placebo. A complete lymphocyte count carried out before and after four weeks of administration revealed that the majority of subjects who took Black Seed displayed a 72% increase in helper-to-suppressor T-cell ratio as well as an increase in NK (natural killer) cell functional activity.

In the field of AIDS research, human clinical trials conducted at the Department of Biological and Medical Research Center in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia (1997) showed that Black Seed enhanced the ratio between helper T-cell by 55% with a 30% enhancement of NK cell activity. These findings suggest that Black Seed could play an important role in the treatment of cancer, AIDS, and other immune deficiency states.
